Who is Jesus, and why should I care?

01 · Why look back?

Why should we look back thousands of years?

We live fast. Look forward, not back. Put yourself first, follow your own truth. So why would anyone stop to ask about a man who lived two thousand years ago, on the other side of the world, in a culture nothing like ours?

Maybe because the question isn’t really about the past. It’s about whether this man is still alive, and whether He’s who He said He was.

Was Jesus even a real person? Historians, including non-Christian ones, agree that he was. Was Jesus just a good moral teacher, or someone worth admiring like any other wise figure from history? Or was what He claimed about Himself actually true?Jesus of Nazareth was a real man in first-century Israel — that part isn’t in dispute, even among historians who aren’t Christians. But the claim at the heart of the Christian faith is bigger: Jesus wasn’t only a man. He was God himself, taking on a human life. Not a good teacher with wise sayings. God, in the flesh, walking among the people he made.

"Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the thiungs that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught."

02 · What did he claim?

What Jesus said about himself

Jesus didn’t leave room to only be seen as a “good teacher”. In his own words, you’ll find a man who not only taught incredible moral lessons, but also claimed to have the power to forgive sins; something only God can do.
When he said “before Abraham was, I am,” he’s referring to himself with the same name God used when he revealed himself to Abraham.
Who accepted worship instead of correcting it.

A man who said those things and wasn’t telling the truth wouldn’t be a good teacher at all; he’d be a liar, or he’d have believed something false about himself.
The only way “good teacher” survives is if Jesus is telling the truth: that He really was, and is, God among us.

And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
"I and the Father are one.”
Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

03 · What Jesus did

His life, death, and resurrection

Jesus didn’t just make empty claims; His life, death, and resurrection proved he is who he claimed to be.

He lived the perfect sinless life none of us could live. He’s fully God, fully man, never once turning away from the rescue mission he came to accomplish. Then he was rejected by the people he came to save, given a false trial, beaten, executed on a Roman cross, where he took on himself the punishment for sin that wasn’t his own, so that those who trust him could be forgiven and brought back to God forever.

But he didn’t stay dead – three days later,Jesus rose from the dead. Not a metaphor, not a story someone made up. A real, historical claim, backed by hundreds of eye-witnesses people, and those who staked their lives on having seen him alive again. The resurrection is what turns everything from an interesting claim into an unavoidable one.

If it’s true, Jesus is who he said he was.

04 · Why it matters

Why would this matter to me?

Most of us aren’t losing sleep over “sin” as a word. But underneath that word is something we all recognise.

At the centre of it is this: we were made to love God above everything else — but instead, we love ourselves first. We want to run our own lives, answer to no one, be our own god. That’s what sin actually is: not just doing bad things, but rejecting and rebelling against the God who made us and loves us, in favour of ourselves.

And here’s the hard part: we can’t undo that on our own. No amount of trying harder, being kinder, or cleaning up our lives can fix a heart that’s turned away from God. We’re genuinely stuck — helpless to save ourselves.

That’s exactly why Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection matter. He didn’t come to help people who had it mostly together. He came for people who are stuck, to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.

05 · What now?

How do you respond?

This doesn’t mean we’re to come to make ourselves presentable and our lives in order before coming to Jesus. This isn’t about trying harder or turning over a new leaf.

We’re to repent from our rebellion against God, and turn from living life as if we were god ourself.
We’re to turn and come back toward God – enjoying relationship with him, trusting him, and putting your confidence in Jesus who paid your debt of sin fully.

It’s an invitation offered to everyone, to you; turn from your sin and come unto Jesus.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son; that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
